The Story               This is a concert poster from November 7, 1969 of The Who headlining at the Convocation Center in Athens Ohio at Ohio University. I am Courtney Johns the drummer in the opening act, The Silk, as written on the poster. We were managed by the Belkin brothers in Cleveland and put on as opening acts for The Who, Johnny Winter, Creedance Clearwater Rivial, Country Joe and the Fish, Bloodsweat and Tears, Sly and the Family Stone, and Paul Revere and the Raiders. We made an album for ABC records in 1968 called "Smooth as Raw Silk". After this concert with The Who, Keith Moon gave me this drumhead because it had a cracked rim. They were a great band and wacky but nice guys. Keith Moon played like a truck load of trunks falling high speed down stairs and winding up on time, exciting and chaotic.

This is the album I played drums on with my brother Chris Johns, Michael (Gee) Stanley and Randy Sabo, on ABC Records in 1968. The producer of our album was Bill Szymczyk, a well known music producer in New York City. He worked with: B.B. King, The James Gang, The Eagles, Michael Stanley, and Elvin Bishop.

Listen to "I Can't Explain" by The Who, that was recorded October and November 1969 on their North American tour. This is the time our band The Silk opened for  them and I got the Drumhead from Keith Moon. There were 14 songs taken from the soundboard recordings at the concerts and later made into acetates (vinyl records). They all can be heard at Bigozine2.com. These recordings are the most exciting ones I have ever heard of The Who, I know because I was there and these bring back incredible memories. This is what Rock N Roll is about.
